"Ethics and Practice for Professionals Working in Conflict Zones: From Denial to Action”

Ossim Shalom- Social Workers for Peace and Welfare, the School of Social Work at Haifa University, and the Haifa Universityflagship project: Promoting Solidarity and Combating Social Exclusionare pleased to announce that they will be hosting an international conference which will focus on ethical and practice issues for multi-disciplinary professionals working in conflict zones.

The conference will be held on May 12, 2015 from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm at Haifa University.

The conference will focus on political, religious, ethnic, and national issues related to the conflict and the unique challenges faced by those working with the most vulnerable and affected populations. More specifically, the complexities of ethics and practice topics relevant to professionals from the fields of mental health, health, education, social welfare, and law. Providing crisis intervention and immediate responses to at-risk and increasingly vulnerable populations in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict presents an increasing amount of obstacles for professionals striving to uphold professional codes of conduct and ethical principles, provide best case practice, and meet the harrowing and constantly changing needs of their clients. This conference will provide a platform for researchers, academics, service providers, and students from a variety of disciplines to present and discuss their experiences and challenges faced while working in a conflict zone, with other professionals from Israel and the international community.

The organizing committee invites interested participants to provide feedback and suggestions for project proposals, programming, and posters related to the below topics:

-Jewish and Arab professionals facing the reality of the conflict

-Cultural competency and multiculturalism within the framework of the conflict

-The role of professionals in the promotion of peace and prevention of war

-Treatment of the affected populations

-Preparation, implementation, and delivery of emergency services

-Professionalism and Practice as they relate to core conflict issues (borders, occupation, settlements, terror, and violence in Jerusalem)

-Professionalism and the language of hate and racism

Any suggestions or proposals for projects, programs, and posters for this conference should be emailed to ossim-shalom@bezeqint.netby March 15, 2015.
